to get to the Bronx Zoo on Wednesday, April 23, 2008....but so did everyone else in the free world ...so, we decided to make lemonade out of our lemons - which has become kind of our forte as of late - you should try it sometime - and we went to the New York Botanical Gardens instead! Coincidentally, it happened to be the perfect place to feed my flora fixation as of late! Ahhh, synchronicity!

The unique flower in your picture is a Blue Passion Flower (Passiflora caerulea) -- named for the Passion of Christ by missionaries who considered the flower's unique physical structures to be symbols of the Crucifixion.
The spiral tendrils on the vines were deemed to represent the whips used to scourge Christ. The 10 petals and sepals represent the 10 faithful Apostles. The radial filaments represent the Crown of Thorns. The top 3 stigmata represent the 3 nails and the lower 5 anthers represent the 5 wounds.
Thanks so much Molly ... only two of us saw this particular flower and we were absolutely fascinated by it.
